Auto giant Jaguar Land Rover is planning on testing the prototype of the brand-new Defender SUV that will be based on hydrogen fuel cells.
This new project by the British automaker is proposed under Project Zeus, which is also a part of JLR’s strategy to produce zero carbon emission vehicles by 2039.
The project is being worked on under the collaboration of AVL, Delta Motorsport, Marelli Automotive Systems, and the U.K Battery Industrialization Center. As the world-famous off-roader is now running on a carbon-emitting fuel source, it might be a tough job for the automaker to power the Defender with a hydrogen powertrain and most primarily with the same towing and off-roading capabilities.

How do Hydrogen-Powered cells work?
In this process, hydrogen and oxygen are combined in fuel cells to produce electricity without any combustion. Further, the electricity generated by these cells is used to power the electric motor.
And as per researchers, hydrogen-based cells are highly lucrative as these cells adopt high-energy-density keeping hold of the range even in cold temperatures. Simply, you can run hydrogen cell-based EVs for a longer period compared to the normal ones.
