NASA took Perseverance Rover to its first spin

NASA's Perseverance rover has successfully completed its first test drive since landing on the surface of Mars. The rover landed on Mars on February 18th and after 14 days of landing successfully on the surface of Mars, NASA took the rover for its first test ride on March 4th. The announcement was made by NASA on Friday in which they said that the rover went on a 33 minutes short ride in which it traveled 21.3 feet (6.5 meters) around its landing site. But before its ride on the Martian surface, NASA replaced the program on Perseverance that helped it land on Mars with a new software update that will help it investigate the planet instead.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been this excited to see wheel tracks, and I’ve seen a lot of them,” Anais Zarifian, a mobility testbed engineer, said. “The rover’s six-wheel-drive responded superbly. We are now confident our drive system is good to go, capable of taking us wherever the science leads us over the next two years.”

What seems to be an insane milestone for humankind is only the first of many technical tests Perseverance needs to complete before it starts to investigate more on Jezero Crater, which was once an ancient lake.
