An EV charging station has been officially opened on the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) premises at Ratnapark, Kathmandu. Pampha Bhusal, Minister of Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, officially opened the station.

The NEA is pursuing a push to build quick vehicle charging stations on the nation's highways, and large cities should promote the usage of electric vehicles and boost the efficiency of the energy sector. Fifty-one charging stations are being set up nationwide to help with this. Moreover, NEA has a contract to construct 17 charging stations run by the Armed Police and 25 by the Nepal Police.

The authority will install an online charging system, a 50 kVA power supply transformer, and a 142 kW charger in every charging station it constructs. At the charging stations, depending on the location, fast charging 60/60 KW DC and 22 KW AC chargers will be provided

The cost of vehicle charging is approximately 70 paisa for cars, 80 paise for SUVs, 90 paise for microbuses, and Rs 1 for buses every kilometer. The charge amount can be paid through the authority's mobile app. Similarly, NEA has also created the necessary NSP (National Service Provider) framework for online reservations.

The charging station is available to everyone, according to NEA MD Kulman Ghising, and service will be reasonably priced. To operate more of these charging stations, the authority also stated that it is open to cooperation from the commercial sector.

Interested private businesses can launch EV charging stations by investing 20% more than what the NEA does for each unit. Mr. Ghising also stated that the pricing rates would vary depending on the time of day but insisted that they would still be significantly less expensive than privately run systems. An EV can be entirely charged in 1 to 1.30 hours.

The authorities claim that preparations have reached the end of the physical infrastructure building process in other places. Along with the Tribhuvan International Airport, new charging stations will be constructed at Halchowk, Pulchowk, and Balkhu in Kathmandu.

The following areas outside the valley will also have the charging stations:
