Qualcomm’s new 5nm Snapdragon 780G chip | Flagship performance at affordable price

Qualcomm has come with its new Snapdragon 7-series chipset named the Snapdragon 780G which borrows some features from the Flagship Snapdragon 888 but comes in more affordable pricing.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 7-series is quite famous on the more affordable mid-range range smartphones. Devices like Pixel 4a, OnePlus Nord, and many more mid-ranged smartphones all featured the 7-series of the Snapdragon. The 7-series chip of Snapdragon such as 730G, 765G, and 720G are much loved and appreciated in the market as it comes at an affordable price and has a great performance to show for. Although loved by a lot the series was not as flagship as the 800 series chips from Qualcomm. Previous 7-series chips were mostly criticized for not giving the best camera experience and also the processor seemed to underperform when presented with more performance demanding tasks.

With the introduction of the Snapdragon 780, the chip takes the top spot in the 700 series lineup and looks to eliminate the flaws its predecessors had. Firstly this will the first 7-series chip of Qualcomm based on 5nm. The Kyro 670 CPU on the 780G is supposed to be 40% faster than the previous 7-series chip from Qualcomm, and a new Adreno 642 GPU in the chip will grant 50% faster graphics compared to previous 7-series chips.

Going on to the camera performance 780G has a Spectra 570 image signal processor (ISP) and the main feature of the Spectra 570 is its ability to take three 25MP images at the same time. In simple terms in one click, you can take a photo from 3 lenses of your camera. Also, the new design on the Spectra 570 gives a better performance in low-light and can support HDR10+ video.

Like all the modern chips 780G also supports 5G and for the connectivity, the chip has FastConnect 6900 technology which according to claims of the company makes its WiFi 6E modem capable of speeds up to 3.6Gbps. Also, the AI components will get boosted compared to previous 7-series chips due to the Hexagon processor of 780G.

It won’t take long to see the new Snapdragon 780G chip rollout in the new smartphones. The first phones with the chip are expected to release in the second quarter of 2021.
