Qualcomm on the MWC 2021 has announced the successor of the Snapdragon 888 called Snapdragon 888 Plus. SD 888 in itself is a powerful chipset but the upgraded SD 888 Plus improves CPU clock speed and AI Engine performance.
Snapdragon 888 Plus is almost the same chipset as the non plus model, the major difference being the CPU clock speed and upgraded AI Engine. Qualcomm has upgraded the Kyro 680 CPU clock speed from 2.8GHz to 2.995GHz, which Qualcomm rounds up to 3GHz in their marketing. Qualcomm’s sixth-gen AI Engine also gets an upgrade from 26 trillion operations per second (TOPS) to 32 TOPS. this improvement makes the SD 888 Plus AI approximately 20 percent more powerful than the non plus SD 888.

Apart from the boosted CPU and AI Engine, the rest of the chipset is pretty much the same, as we can see in the above specifications. Snapdragon 888 Plus still features the same Adreno 660 GPU, It still has the same X60 5G modem with top download speeds of 7.5GBps. Likewise, the chipset has the same Spectra 580 IPS that enables triple concurrent capture with parallel processing at up to 2.7 gigapixels per second. Furthermore, the FastConnect 6900 Connectivity System brings the fastest Wi-Fi 6 & 6E speeds of any mobile Wi-Fi offering in the industry (Up to 3.6 Gbps) like we see in the Snapdragon 888. Refreshing their existing chipset with boosted CPU performance is nothing new we have seen from Qualcomm. The company took similar approaches with SD855 to SD855 Plus and SD865 to SD865 Plus.
Qualcomm believes that the first smartphone with Snapdragon 888 Plus will come around the 3rd quarter of 2021. Many smartphone companies like Honor, Motorola, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Asus are planning smartphones with the new Snapdragon 888 Plus chipset.
