The Tata Tigor was initially showcased as a pre-production model named Kite 5 at the Auto Expo 2016. It was only in 2017 that the official name Tigor was announced, and production commenced with sales starting in March of that year in the Indian market.

Like the Tata Tiago, the Tigor is built on the Tata X1 platform, which has been re-engineered from the version previously used by the Indica and Bolt models. The wheelbase of the Tigor is extended by 5 centimeters compared to the Tiago to provide more rear space. The Tigor features front-wheel drive, with a traditional suspension setup: a MacPherson strut with a stabilizer bar at the front and a twist-beam axle at the rear.
