Speaking at the launch ceremony, former banker Anil Keshari Shah said, “Wuling Air EV is unique to the Nepali market. Wuling Air EV is suitable for customers who need to commute a few kilometers around the workplace or so. The price of the EV is also relevant to what people can afford.”
“Customers who were inclined towards buying an EV but couldn’t afford it due to high price previously could also consider Air EV to be the appropriate choice”, Shah added.
He believes Wuling would change the market structure and customers' perception in the days to come.
Dhurba Thapa, a chairperson of the Nepal Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) said, “Wuling can be the standard EV for everyone and can change people’s perception of an electric vehicle. The standard of the vehicle that can be purchased at the price offered by Wuling is what customers get utmost at that value.”
People’s fear the price of battery replacement cost at the end of its lifetime, which Thapa believes won’t be an issue as the price is on decreasing trend. He said that the price of batteries has decreased by 30% over the last 5 years and would continue the trend to more R&D competitors.
Kulman Ghising, the chairperson of NED said, “The consumption of electricity would decrease the import of fossil fuels and helps to achieve the target of net-zero emission.”
He asked everyone to know the comparison of the cost of EV and ICE vehicles, fuel, and maintenance costs before buying the vehicle. He further added that the use of EVs could reduce the import of diesel and petrol which are the top two imports in the country. This would help us maintain the Balance of Payment (BoP) deficit as well.
Bhaban Bhatta, President of NRN (2017-19), the first importer of EVs in Nepal for commercial purposes, said we need to implement new policies to enhance the growth of EVs.
