A vehicle has become one of the most essential means for most of the general public today. While in a country like ours where there is not sufficient access to public transport, it is often difficult for people who have to work for long office hours without a private vehicle.

Nowadays, it has become very common for people to have at least one two-wheeler or a four-wheeler at their homes depending on their ability and desire. And for those owning a private vehicle, its maintenance and servicing have also become of the measures of increasing expenses.

As fuel is a primary essential for daily commuting, it is very important to make limited use of it. Generally, petrol, diesel and electric power are used as a means of fuel in the car. Although the use of electric vehicles in Nepal has increased steadily in recent years, the initial investment is still out of reach for many of us.

So, here we have tried to share with you some tips and measures on how to reduce the consumption of fuel in petrol and diesel vehicles. Let’s have a look at it.

1. Regular servicing

Most of the people are seen to be not servicing their machines timely on a regular basis which, in turn, increases the fuel consumption of the vehicle. With regular maintenance, one can easily feel the difference in the sound and speed of the vehicle.

Primary factors such as lubricants and air-filters should be regularly checked and replaced whenever required. Vehicles can be kept at its optimum best condition by taking necessary corrective measures which will reduce fuel consumption.

2. Monitor the tire pressure

A tire plays a primary role to make the journey comfortable while riding a vehicle. Wheel rim, tube, and tires are the significant facets in a car or a motorcycle. Ideally, the air pressure on all the tires needs to be at a perfect level if the vehicle has to function at its optimum level.

Therefore, it is important to have a certain amount of ideal tire pressure on the vehicle so that the engine won’t have to face extra workload to accelerate the machine which, in turn, increases the fuel consumption too. Mostly during summer and winter seasons, the tire pressure should be monitored every week.

3. Use appropriate gears

Always keep your vehicle at a proper gear while driving. One should not run at a high speed in small gear and vice versa. If the proper number of gears is used based on its maximum and minimum speed, it reduces the fuel consumption in the vehicle. You should always practice keeping your rpm between 2000-3000 while driving a vehicle. This helps to reduce the consumption of fuel.

Likewise, it is best to turn off the engine while you are in traffic. However, if the traffic stoppage time is less than a minute, then offsetting the engine won’t do any good.

4. Minimize the use of AC

If you are driving a car with an AC system, then make a minimum usage of it. During summer, running AC requires more fuel as the AC compressor has to run. Driving with the AC also degrades the performance of the car’s engine.

Even when using AC, it is advisable to turn it on only after the car takes on a normal speed. If the AC is turned on initially the engine requires more power for starting up both the wheels as well as the AC compressor.

5. Avoid sudden brakes

Most of the drivers also have the habit of taking sudden brakes which is not good for the vehicle’s engine. While driving, do always try to control the speed of the vehicle so that you won’t have to hit sudden brakes. More on, hitting brakes at high speed also increases the chance of brake pads washing out quickly. Also, more fuel is wasted due to sudden brakes.

Instead of hitting sudden brakes, make a habit of controlling the speed by lowering the gear remotely.
