The foldable smartphone shipment reached 2.22 million, growing 571% in Q1 2022. According to a recent report from DSCC, Q1 2022 was the 3rd best quarter ever since the first foldable smartphone launched back in 2019. However, the shipments were down 47% quarter on quarter, as the Q4 of 2021 saw a record high of 4.2M units in shipments.
Samsung still dominates the foldable market as it accounted for about 74% of the market share in the quarter. Huawei saw its share rising to 20%, while no other brands had more than a 2% share in this category.
The clamshell foldable smartphones remain the consumer favorite when it comes to smartphone models. These specific foldable models accounted for a 70% share in Q1, its highest share since Q3 2020.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 was the best-selling foldable smartphone in Q1 2022. This flippable device accounted for 51% of the foldable market, leading the market for the third straight quarter. After Flip 3, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 was the second-most shipped foldable smartphone in the quarter.
Huawei’s P50 Pocket followed the Fold 3 closely with around 19% share in the third spot. The top 3 models combined for a 91% share, and no other foldable models had more than a 2.5% share in the Q1.
According to the reports, the foldable smartphone market is expected to increase by 107% in 2022. Samsung’s upcoming Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 are expected to drive the market this year, along with new models from three other brands.
