The global Chromebook shipments fell by 60% year on year in Q1 2022. According to a recent report from Canalys, the global Chromebook market has undergone an expected slowdown as only 4.9 million units were shipped in the quarter, and all the major vendors suffered double-digit falls in the quarter.

The slowdown in consumer and educational sector spending on Chromebooks after the COVID-19 demand spike is said to be the major reason behind the dip. As the educational sector is slowly moving back to physical classes, a slowdown was expected prior. Further, the biggest Chromebook market, North America, which makes about 72% of worldwide Chromebook shipments, fell by 64%.

Despite huge drops, Canalys writes that the Chromebooks still had an impressive Q1 when viewed in the wider context of historical performance. Further, the growth is set to return as markets undergo refresh cycles and education markets solidify their plans around digitalization.
