All the unfavorable economic conditions like the Russia-Ukraine war, lockdowns in China, and the threat of inflation affected the worldwide smartphone shipment in the first quarter of 2022. According to a recent report from Canalys, the global smartphone shipment fell 11% in Q1 2022. The mixture of uncertainty due to the unfavorable economic conditions and the traditionally slow seasonal demand affected the smartphone vendors in Q1.

Despite the ongoing uncertainties, leading smartphone vendors managed to grow by broadening device portfolios. Market leader Samsung captured a 24% share of the global market backed by its flagship Galaxy S22 series and budget-friendly A-series. Samsung’s global share was up from 19% quarterly and 22% yearly. After Samsung, Apple came second with an 18% market share in the quarter. The iPhone 13 series continues to be a strong seller for the American company, while the iPhone SE 2022 managed to become an important mid-range volume driver for Apple.

Three Chinese smartphone makers managed to round up the top 5 spots. Xiaomi was third with a 13% market share. It managed to stay in third with the help of its Redmi Note series, which saw strong demand in the market. Oppo and Vivo were in the 4th and 5th spots with 10% and 8% share, respectively. All three Chinese OEMs' global share was down from 14%, 11%, and 10% a year before.

Canalys also points out that the component shortages might improve sooner than expected, which will significantly help relieve cost pressures for the OEMs.
