No more grey market of smartphone

Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has plans to implement (MDMS) Mobile Device Management System from Jestha of 2078 as informed by Mr. Purushottam Khanal ( Chairman, NTA)

Mobile Device Management System or MDMS, in short, is a government-owned management system that keeps records of all mobile phones, tablets, and other similar electronic products through the IMEI number of the device that enters the border of the country. IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique number of the device that helps identify it.

The introduction of MDMS will effectively stop the illegal import of mobile phone devices in the country as any national telecom operator will block those devices from the network. And people involved in such activities will be under some legal action. Also, NTA has made the IMEI registration online which will be convenient for the users.

MDMS seemed to be the most needed thing for a long time in the smartphone market of Nepal. The grey market of smartphones covers a lot of the overall smartphone market of Nepal. To avoid the payment of 13% VAT and 2.5% excise duty on mobile imports people are being involved in the grey market of smartphones in Nepal. The introduction of MDMS surely will help bring justice to the smartphone market which does the business following the rules of NTA.
