Delhi Metro and Buses likely to be free for women

In the recent announcement by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), a political party in India, if everything goes well as planned then metro and buses fare in Delhi will be free for women in National capital.

According to a TOI report, Aam Aadmi Party(AAP) who is a 50% equity partner in Delhi Metro is planning on implementing this rule of free travel for women in Delhi buses and metros.

A meeting has been held with officials in Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to see if this proposal is feasible or not. However, the DMRC says that it would be a great challenge in implementing this new rule as it may lead to some additional complications. They said that this may arouse or lead to “spurt in ridership”.

In the past, the AAP government had already obliged the DMRC on decreasing Metro rail fares in Delhi as the fares were not much affordable to general local residents in Delhi while metros are the major necessity for the local public in Delhi as it’s the key means of transportation for running around works, schools, offices and other needs.

After implementing this new free fare system, in the startup, about 2 billion rupees per year should be spent only for the bus. In the recently held Lok Sabha election, Aam Aadmi Party got defeated in all seven seats in Delhi. The party has got fewer votes this time compared to the past.

The current convener of AAM, Arvind Kejriwal seems to be trying to secure the majority votes in the upcoming Delhi Assembly election after a year.
