What is better than traditional fuel/gas vehicles? Zero-emission Electric vehicles! This statement has never been truer than in the current times. Presently, Nepal is emitting too much co2 gas, and so far, the largest source of this is the traditional vehicles. We already know why buses are much better than cars and bikes. They take up less space; carry more people which in turn decreases the vehicle density on roads.

For the last decade, it has been everyone’s dream to make Nepal free of air pollution. However, even with the best intentions, we had neither the resources nor the access to the required technology to make electric buses a real thing. Fortunately, the times have changed now. So, are electric buses and ambulances available in Nepal?

In this article, we will go through the status of electric vehicles including the buses and ambulances that are currently available in Nepal. We also discuss what changes it will bring.

KIST medical college currently operates the first electric ambulance in Nepal. Their vision for the electric ambulance comes from the BYD T3 electric van. It had the perfect specs and size for an ambulance, so KIST teamed up with a BYD manufacturer to turn the van into an ambulance. This ambulance features a two-seater design on the front, and a massive 3800 liters back compartment. It will also cause less strain on the patient’s body due to an improved suspension, braking, and impact-reduction mechanism.

Features of BYD Electric Ambulance

  • It comes with a 50 kW iron-phosphate battery.
  • Takes one and a half hours to fully charge.
  • 300 km range on a single full charge.
  • Includes features such as keyless entry, speed sensors, and parking assist.
  • It is equipped with a ventilator, ECG monitors, a foldable bed, and an oxygen supply.

Conclusion

The arrival of electric buses and ambulances has certainly created a new wave of awareness among the Nepalese people. Common people are very excited to enjoy a smooth ride in the new vehicles, while the owners are happy to save lots of money on fuel and maintenance costs. These new vehicles' ticket prices and bus fares have remained the same, even though fuel-based vehicles are getting hard to sustain even at higher fare rates.

The comfort and feature level of ambulances has also increased significantly. If anything, we just do not have enough e-buses and electric ambulances available in Nepal. Nevertheless, rumors are saying the first e-vehicles manufacturing plant will start in Nepal around 2025. We sure hope these rumors are true.
