In the first quarter of 2022, a total of 311.2 million smartphones were shipped worldwide, down 11% year on year.  According to reports from Canalys, Samsung shipped the most smartphone during the period reaching 73.7 million units, down 4% from a year ago. The Korean tech giant was able to retake the lead after refreshing its Galaxy portfolio for 2022. It was backed by its flagship Galaxy S22 series and budget-friendly A-series

Apple posted solid growth of 8% in the quarter, even when the worldwide smartphone shipment was affected by unfavorable economic conditions like the Russia-Ukraine war, lockdowns in China, and the threat of inflation. The American company was second in terms of shipment volume, shipping 56.5 million units worldwide. High demand for its iPhone 13 series and the iPhone SE 2022 managed to be the volume driver for Apple.

The Chinese market caused nearly half the worldwide decline. The ongoing COVID lockdowns in the region, component shortages, and rising inflation affected the major Chinese vendors. Xiaomi was the third largest on the global list, shipping 39.2 million units. However, its shipment fell over 30% year on year in regions like the  Middle East and Africa in Q1 (20% globally), due to supply pressure at the low-end segment. After Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo rounded up the top five, shipping 29.0 million and 25.1 million units, respectively. Both these Chinese smartphone makers saw shipment fall by over 26% in the quarter globally.

Analysts in Canalys believe that the inflation, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, COVID-19 restrictions, and supply disruptions will affect all levels of operation and planning for the vendors. However, the component shortages are expected to improve sooner, which will significantly help relieve cost pressures for the OEMs.

Canalys previously reported the global market share of the smartphone vendors in Q1 2022, which you can find from our past article “The global smartphone shipment fell 11% in Q1 2022 | Samsung led the market.
