Better than Qualcomm??
Reports coming out from Omdia reveal that the most favorite chipset among the smartphones OEMs was the MediaTek chipset as MediaTek’s chipsets shipment was 351.8 million units to the major smartphones OEMs. Also, MediaTek covered 27.2% of the smartphone chipset market share in 2020.
The company saw massive growth as compared to its 2019 stats. Mediatek only had a 17.2% market share back in 2019 and the shipment of the chipset was also 238 million units. 2020 marks a great year for MediaTek as they became the leading smartphone chip supplier for the first time. Mediatek overcame Qualcomm who previously was the leading smartphone chip supplier.
In 2020 only Xiaomi shipped around 63.7 million units of smartphones with the MediaTek chips which is a growth of around 223.3% if you compare the stats with the year 2019 in which Xiaomi only shipped 19.7 million units of smartphones with MediaTek chipset.
Oppo on the other hand shipped 55.3 million smartphones powered by MediaTek in 2020 making Oppo the second biggest customer of the MediaTek chips. Samsung also increased the purchase of the MediaTek chips in 2020. Samsung shipped around 43.3 million units of smartphones with MediaTek chips on them.

MediaTek saw massive growth in the market as many top Smartphone OEMs started using the MediaTek chipsets more in their smartphones. Also, Huawei after getting on the Trade Blacklist of the US government has turned to MediaTek for their smartphone chips which also gives MediaTek an advantage over Qualcomm.
The reports coming from Omdia credits the Popularity of the Mid to low-end smartphones and MediaTek’s ability to show its presence as the alternative to the Qualcomm chips in that price segment to be the driving force behind the growth of MediaTek. The recent pandemic and everything going online have made the popularity and demand of mid to low-end smartphones higher than ever before.
MediaTek will definitely try to replicate the year they had. With the growing smartphone market if only MediaTek can compete in the high-end smartphone market with the likes of Qualcomm then MediaTek is set to dominate the smartphone chipset market.
