Honor overtakes Xiaomi in China | Vivo and Oppo continue to outsell their competitors

The newly independent company Honor is now a top 3 smartphone manufacturer in China. After almost a year since Honor separated from Huawei, the smartphone has managed to capture 18% of the market share in its homeland China. In Q3 2021, Honor shipped 14.2 million devices, a 25% year-over-year increase and a 105% increase over the previous quarter. Now the company ranks higher than Apple, Xiaomi, and its former owner Huawei in China.

According to the reports of Canalys, Smartphone shipment fell by 5% in China, reaching 78.8 million units in Q3 2021. The Chinese smartphone market is expected to have a low growth rate for the rest of the year as it suffers due to global chipset shortages.

The Chinese smartphone market was topped by Vivo, shipping 18.3 million units for a 23% share. OPPO, which has now merged with OnePlus, stayed in second place with 16.5 million shipments and a 21% market share.
Xiaomi fell to the fourth spot, shipping 10.9 million units with a meager 4% annual growth. It was the worst-performing OEM in China’s top five. Apple on the other hand was the biggest gainer in Q3 boosted by its iPhone 13 series. As per reports, pre-orders and early orders for iPhone 13 were high, with many customers opting to wait several weeks for delivery.

According to Canalys, “Chinese smartphone vendors are already well into their product roadmap planning for 2022, assessing new form factors, such as foldable and rollable smartphones, to carve out additional volume and revenue from an already saturated market.”
