The Chinese short video sharing platform TikTok was the most downloaded app in 2020. According to the reports of Nikkei Asia, TikTok overtook Facebook as the world’s most downloaded app in 2020 for the first time since the study was first conducted back in 2018.
TikTok as we all know is a video-sharing social networking service owned by ByteDane. This social media platform is used to make a variety of short videos that have a duration from fifteen seconds to three minutes. The international version of the app was launched back in 2017.
Facebook-owned social media apps- Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger all managed to be in the top five. According to the reports, people's need to isolate themselves during the COVID-19 pandemic boosted the use of social media. TikTok was the leading downloaded app in Europe, South America, and the U.S during the pandemic.
People’s concern for personal privacy made Telegram, a messaging app that can delete posts also ranked high during the year.
In 2020, former US President Donald Trump issued an executive order to ban TikTok in the US. Trump believed that the personal information shared with TikTok was not secure. Nevertheless, the app’s popularity grew during the 2020 pandemic and was the most downloaded app of the year in the US as well.
Furthermore, another Chinese short video sharing platform and TikTok’s competitor Likee was ranked eighth in the latest global download ranking.
