Japanese automaker Toyota has officially unveiled its much-awaited compact SUV- Urban Cruiser Hyryder in the Indian market. Built under a joint collaboration with Maruti Suzuki India and Toyota India, this SUV will be available in both mild-hybrid as well as strong-hybrid engine options.
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Overview
Design
The design of the new Hyryder mimics the company’s previously sold SUVs in the international market. The SUV features fully-LED headlamps and taillights alongside a muscular bumper resting at the front.
Moreover, Toyota also encrypts a ‘Hybrid’ badging on the SUVs doors (in strong hybrid models). This is the same thing we’ve seen in the full hybrid Toyota model sold overseas. The major highlight of the design seems to be the C-shaped taillights and parking lamps in the SUV which emit a unique feel.
Powertrains and Trims
The new Hyryder SUV will be available in 4 different trims- E, S, G, and V for the mild-hybrid powertrain model, while the strong-hybrid models will offer three trims- S, G, and V.
Coming on to the engine, the first compact Hybrid SUV in India will emboss a strong hybrid technology in the car. The Hyryder will feature Toyota’s 4th generation e-drive hybrid tech.
The SUV is powered by a 1.5L TNGA Atkinson Cycle engine churning out a peak power of 92bhp alongside a peak torque of 122Nm. In addition, the electric motor mated to it delivers a power of 79bhp and 141Nm of peak torque.

On the battery side, Toyota packs the sub-compact SUV with a 177.6V lithium-ion unit that offers only a range of 25 km/hr.
In addition, Toyota is also offering another engine option,i.e. the Neo Drive Engine. This is the same engine used in Maruti Suzuki’s popular cars XL6, Ertiga, and Brezza. The unit is a 1.5L K15C petrol unit that churns out a max power of 103bhp alongside 137 Nm of peak torque.
For gear transmission, Toyota offers two options in the SUV- a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gear.
Interior
The interior of the SUV features a similar layout as that of the Glanza, Suzuki’s Baleno, and Brezza. The SUV features a dual-tone black and brown theme in the interior while the front dashboard is leather padded.
However, this interior tone is not standard across all models. The dual-interior theme will only be offered in the full hybrid version while the mild-hybrid model will boast an all-black interior.
Premium features such as a fully-digital instrument cluster and infotainment system, modern connectivity options, panoramic sunroof, heads-up display, 360-degree camera, voice-assist feature, wireless charging, ventilated seats, and more will also be included in the new Toyota Urban Cruiser Hybrid.

In addition, Toyota is also offering an All-Wheel-Drive option in the new Hyryder.
